Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule suggests withdrawing 4% of your portfolio in year one of retirement, then adjusting for inflation each year. Historically, this has allowed portfolios to last 30+ years. That's why we multiply desired annual income by 25 (1/0.04 = 25).

What return should I assume?

The stock market has historically returned ~10% annually, or ~7% after inflation. Using 7% is conservative for long-term planning. If you're more conservative or near retirement, use 5-6%. Don't assume past returns guarantee future results.

How much of my income should I save?

A common target is 15-20% of gross income, including employer matches. Start with at least enough to get your full employer 401k match. Increase your rate by 1% each year until you reach your target. The earlier you start, the less you need to save.
