How It Works
This calculator uses the weighted average formula. Your final grade equals your current grade times its weight, plus your final exam grade times the final's weight. We solve for the final exam grade needed to reach your desired outcome.
The formula: Needed Grade = (Desired Grade - Current Grade × Current Weight) ÷ Final Weight
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I need more than 100%?
If the calculator shows you need over 100%, your desired grade isn't mathematically possible with just the final. Consider talking to your professor about extra credit or adjusting your expectations.
How do I find my current grade?
Check your course syllabus or learning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.). Your current grade should reflect all assignments completed so far, excluding the final.
What's a typical final exam weight?
Most finals are worth 15-30% of your total grade. Some courses have finals worth up to 40-50%. Check your syllabus for the exact percentage.
Can I calculate for multiple exams?
This calculator assumes one remaining assessment. If you have multiple exams left, you'd need to calculate based on combined weight and decide how to distribute the needed points across remaining assessments.
