How It Works

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all the results, and dividing by total credit hours. This gives a weighted average that accounts for the importance of each course.

Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale where A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, and F=0.0. Plus and minus grades adjust by 0.3 points (e.g., B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is excellent and often qualifies for Dean's List. A 3.7+ is outstanding. Requirements vary by institution and program.

Do all schools use the 4.0 scale?

Most US high schools and colleges use a 4.0 scale, though some use weighted GPAs (up to 5.0) for honors and AP courses. Some countries use different scales entirely.

How do I raise my GPA?

Focus on courses where you can improve, use tutoring and study groups, attend office hours, and consider retaking courses if your school allows grade replacement. Higher credit courses have more impact on your GPA.

What's the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA only includes courses from one term. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across your entire academic career at an institution. Graduate schools typically look at cumulative GPA.
