How It Works
We divide your trip distance by your vehicle's MPG to get gallons needed, then multiply by the gas price. For round trips, we double the distance. Cost per person divides the total by the number of passengers sharing the expense.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my car's MPG?
Check your car's window sticker, owner's manual, or visit fueleconomy.gov. Real-world MPG is often 10-15% lower than EPA estimates due to driving conditions. Highway driving typically gets better MPG than city driving.
Why is actual cost sometimes different?
Actual fuel consumption varies with speed, traffic, weather, terrain, AC use, and driving style. Mountain driving or heavy traffic will use more fuel. Consider adding 10-15% buffer to your estimate.
How can I save on gas?
Drive at steady speeds (55-65 mph is most efficient), avoid rapid acceleration and braking, remove excess weight, keep tires properly inflated, use cruise control, and plan routes to avoid traffic.
