How It Works

This calculator uses four well-known formulas developed by different researchers. Each formula estimates ideal body weight based on height, with different calculations for men and women. The formulas were originally developed for drug dosing but are commonly used for weight goals.

We also show the BMI-based healthy weight range, which represents weights corresponding to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9, the range associated with the lowest health risks for most people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which formula is most accurate?

No single formula is definitively "best." Robinson and Miller are generally considered more accurate for most people. The range across formulas gives you a realistic target zone rather than a single number.

Why doesn't this consider age or frame size?

Traditional formulas only use height and gender. In reality, ideal weight varies with age (metabolism slows), frame size (larger bones support more weight), and muscle mass. Use these as starting points, not absolute targets.

What if I'm muscular?

Muscle weighs more than fat. Athletes and weightlifters often exceed these "ideal" weights while being very healthy. Body fat percentage is a better indicator of health than weight alone for muscular individuals.

Should I aim for the lowest number?

Not necessarily. Being too thin carries health risks too. Aim for a weight where you feel energetic, healthy, and can maintain good nutrition. Sustainable, healthy habits matter more than hitting a specific number.
