How It Works

This calculator uses the Widmark formula to estimate BAC. It accounts for the amount of alcohol consumed, body weight, biological sex (which affects water content), and time elapsed (your body metabolizes about 0.015% BAC per hour).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard drink?

A standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That's 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV). Craft beers and cocktails often contain more alcohol.

Why do women typically have higher BAC?

Women generally have a higher percentage of body fat and lower percentage of body water than men. Since alcohol dissolves in water, women tend to have higher BAC from the same amount of alcohol.

Does coffee or food sober you up?

No. Only time reduces BAC—your liver processes alcohol at a fixed rate (about one drink per hour). Food eaten before drinking can slow absorption, but won't help after. Coffee might make you feel more alert but doesn't lower BAC.
